Mini Rugby Program
In 2011 the Saskatchewan Rugby Union and Mini Rugby across Saskatchewan began joining forces to create Saskatchewan Mini Rugby. The goal of joining these entities was to make one united organization allowing volunteers to have all the tools readily available for them to operate or start up a successful community program, making quality Mini Rugby accessible to children across Saskatchewan.
High School Rugby Program
Our member sub unions (Regina Rugby Union and North Sask Rugby Union) organize this program throughout the province. The high school season starts with practices usually by the middle of April. The first tournament is the Junior Festival, which is run as a fun tournament the first weekend of May. The high school season is only approximately 12 weeks long. The Provincial Championship is the first weekend in June and features the top 3 teams from each Sub Union competing for the title. When students are done with high school rugby they can join a club team.
Saskatchewan-National Rugby High Performance Center (NRHPC)
The HPC is designed to increase the skills of our highschool athletes and improve our provincial teams. Starting in January, with camps once a month, the provincial team prospects attend camps in either Saskatoon or Regina to work on some rugby skills and hear presentations from nutritionists, mental trainers, physical trainers, physio therapists, and others that help teach the kids how to be the best athletes that they can be.
Provincial Team Program (PTP)
Sask Rugby supports two major provincial representitive teams at U18 boys and girls as well as two developmental squads at U16 boys and girls. The U18 teams are made up of the highest level high school athletes from all over Saskatchewan. These teams hold regular training camps throughout the summer to prepare for the National Rugby Festival that takes place in August. Past locations for the National Festival include Calgary, Toronto, Newfoundland, and Winnipeg. The development squads train together with the U18 sides learning from some of the best players in the province. These teams will also attend a competition each summer by competing against teams in Alberta or Manitoba. This program is lead by qualified National Coaching Certification Program coaches.
Club rugby is the core of our programs. There are 16 club teams within Saskatchewan. This season runs from May 1 to the finals being in September for division that include Men's Div 1, Men's Div 2 and Women's.
There are two elite senior mens rugby teams found in Saskatchewan. The Regina Prairie Fire and North Saskatchewan Wolverines are elite teams made up of the best players representing their clubs in Saskatchewan. The Saskatchewan Prairie Fire, once part of the Rugby Canada Super League, were split into these north/south teams who now play a home and home game with each other.
